Her Story
About Cheryl
Cheryl Collier-Brown is a dedicated educator, community leader, and lifelong advocate for children and families in Tallahassee, Florida. After a remarkable 35-and-a-half-year career with Leon County Schools, Cheryl retired in 2013, leaving behind a legacy built on compassion, commitment, and a belief that every student has the ability to succeed. She spent 29 years teaching mathematics at Fairview Middle School, where she became especially known for helping students who struggled with math and preparing those facing challenges with the FCAT assessment. Her passion for teaching was inspired by Fairview principal Mr. Henry Murphy, who recognized her potential while she was substituting and encouraged her to pursue certification and continue making a difference in the classroom. Even after retirement, Cheryl’s dedication to education never stopped. She continued serving as a substitute teacher and volunteer at Fairview Middle School, remaining connected to the students, teachers, and community she loves. Throughout her career and beyond, she has believed that education is about more than academics—it is about building confidence, showing compassion, and creating opportunities for young people to thrive. Her greatest reward has been watching former students grow into successful, productive adults and knowing she played a part in their journeys. At 71, Cheryl continues to be a powerful force in her community. She is actively involved in numerous organizations, advisory councils, boards, and her church, including educational and civic initiatives focused on improving opportunities for families in Tallahassee. She serves as a mentor, advocate, and community voice, while also spending time with her 10-year-old goddaughter. Guided by her faith, strong family values, and commitment to service, Cheryl continues to give back to the community that shaped her. Her life reflects a true dedication to leadership, education, and making a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Cheryl
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith in God and the guidance and support of my parents, especially my mother Evelyn my father Jack and my stepfather JC Callaway. They raised me with strong values, teaching me the importance of treating people with respect and expecting that same respect in return. I carry those lessons into my work every day, running my classroom with the same structure, care, and values that my mother brought into our home.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Always give praise and thanks to GOD.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The best advice I would give is to enter education because of a genuine love for teaching and working with students and families, not because of financial gain. Building strong relationships with parents, maintaining structure and discipline with compassion, and showing students that you truly care are essential. When children feel valued, supported, and understood, it creates an environment where they can learn and grow.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in education right now is compensation, which can make it difficult to manage everyday expenses. For those entering this field, it is important to understand that teaching requires a deep commitment and passion for serving students and families. At the same time, education provides the opportunity to make a lasting impact by shaping the next generation and creating meaningful connections within the community.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me are my faith in God, treating others with the same respect and kindness I hope to receive, and being actively involved in my community. I believe in leading by example, standing up for what is right, and being willing to take action rather than simply observe. These values guide how I approach both my personal life and my role as an educator.
