Her Story
About Cheryl
Cheryl Murphy is a creative professional with a zigzag career path that began with a degree in political science and a minor in French. She later earned an art degree and teaching credential, which led her to work as a high school art teacher early in her career and then spend about 20 years as a set decorator in film and television. As a member of the IATSE union, the International Film Workers Union, she has recently pivoted due to industry changes and now works as a freelance decorator and home stager, focusing on home organizing and design. Murphy is an outside-the-box thinker and artist who attributes her success to a supportive upbringing that encouraged trying new things without fear, combined with a professional approach of being nice, appreciative, humble, thoughtful, and conscientious.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Cheryl
01What do you attribute your success to?
I never was told that I couldn't do anything. My mom was a very strong female who was progressive. I just try things and do the best I can. Be nice, appreciative, humble, thoughtful and conscientious of other people. That goes a long way especially in an industry full of egos.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
It's okay to zigzag a little bit. It's okay not to know. It's okay to do something for a while and then decide to try something else. Don't be afraid to try different things and put yourself out there. Nothing is written in concrete. Live an experience because there's so much that we barely get to touch on.
