Her approach emphasizes multimodal, interdisciplinary learning that helps students recognize their strengths, navigate courses successfully, and apply acquired skills effectively in professional contexts. Cheryl’s professional background is extensive and varied. She practiced law for 20 years, handling federal trials, civil rights, employment disputes, bankruptcy, and estate matters, and concurrently pursued careers in music education and performance, teaching and composing across a wide range of instruments and styles. In education, she taught K-12, postsecondary, and adult learners for over 14 years, designing and delivering courses in secondary English, GED, ESL, music, and business. She also applies expertise to online and blended learning, curriculum compliance, and instructional technology, serving as an adjunct instructor and curriculum designer at multiple universities. Beyond her teaching and mentorship, Cheryl is an accomplished researcher and author, with her doctoral dissertation examining the existential experiences of law professors in online learning environments. She integrates innovative multimodal methods—including prose, poetry, visual media, and interactive online tools—to enhance engagement and comprehension. A lifelong learner, entrepreneur, and advocate for accessible, student-centered education, Cheryl continues to inspire and shape the next generation of scholars, practitioners, and educators.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Cheryl

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to God and my faith, which have guided me through a diverse and fulfilling career—from practicing law in federal and state courts, earning my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, and mentoring doctoral students in online learning, to teaching, journalism, music education, entrepreneurship, and community service. I am driven to help others and continue growing personally and professionally.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received was from my first piano teacher who taught me how to perform without looking at the keys. This has instilled a life metaphor: Always look up and keep moving forward,

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The most memorable advice I have for young women was inscribed over a doorway of the high school I attended: "To Thine Own Self Be True" --Shakespeare

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

On many fronts, the field of education has become unnecessarily entangled politically, morally and proactively. Education needs to re-establish and maintain more academically sound curriculum which positively empowers students' lifelong critical thinking, wise professional choices, and personal contribution.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I value most the Authority, Power and Spirit of God which drives my work and personal life. As I continue to design and teach academic curriculum and compose and perform music across multiple genres, I daily endeavor to become more deeply challenged and lastingly productive.
