Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my mama. Growing up, one of the things that she taught me, even though I was a little difficult sometimes, was that I was gonna have integrity, keep a good house, and know how to cook a good meal, but also lean into my intelligence. She was a single mom, and education was highly important to her, but your integrity is everything. She was just an incredible woman, and I hear myself even when I'm talking to kids or others, I hear her coming out. Every day, I find a way to mention her and talk about her. She passed in 2015, and I miss that lady so much. I think about her every single day, and I always think about some way I can honor her. She kept telling me, baby, I want you to go ahead and get that doctorate, and when I received my honorary PhD last year, it was so incredibly special to me because of her. She was whom I looked up to, and everything I do, I do to honor her memory.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Guidance from her mother about integrity and education, plus practical advice Cheryl echoes herself: remember why you stepped into a role, be clear in communication, and remain confident in your abilities.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

One of the things I have to constantly remind myself of is that when you're coming in and you have your own set of skills, and you're confident in the things that you do, like I know I do a good job, there's always gonna be a naysayer or something that comes and kind of will rock you off your foundation. Just remember why you stepped into it. And I use that not only for work advice, but in my personal life, you know, in marriage, in relationships with siblings and cousins and all the things. I have to remember that, you know what, I'm a good person, I come here to do good work, and even if there's a misunderstanding, being clear in your communication, and knowing that you came here, nobody wakes up, I don't think, to do a bad job. And you learn from your mistakes, and you just keep pushing forward.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, education, service to others, and mentorship (demonstrated through consistent volunteer work).
