Her Story
About Cheryl
Cheryl Whitehead earned her bachelor's degree in construction management in 2015, becoming the first in her family to do so after returning to school following six years driving truck. She is currently between jobs and seeking entry-level construction administration positions, including office manager and accounts payable or receivable roles, with the goal of starting at the bottom and working her way up in the construction industry. Unable to perform physical labor, she focuses on office-based opportunities and draws inspiration from her interest in building things and being outdoors. Cheryl volunteers when possible at Grace Baptist Church in Pueblo, Colorado, and credits her success to her get-up-and-go attitude, noting that one must give 110 percent to any task. She advises keeping a positive mindset and pushing forward, emphasizing that women are equally capable as men in the field.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Cheryl
01What do you attribute your success to?
My get up and go. I do things, I don't like to sit around, I keep things going. You gotta give 110% to anything you do.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Keep pushing for that job or whatever you want to do. Just keep pushing, keep going. Don't stop. You can do anything your mind lets you. And if you think positive, you can do it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be the best you can be. Keep going, don't let them discourage you just because you're a female. Women can do just the same as men. We're just as good, we're just as fast, we're just as smart. If not smarter.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
It's hard to get started without 5 years experience as a project manager, especially at my age. They don't give you the chance to show what you can do.
