Her Story
About Cheyenne
I've been working in the government environmental field officially for about 8 years, with additional volunteer history before that. My current position is QAQC Coordinator for the Air Monitoring Program at Pinellas County, where I've been for over 5 years. On a typical day, I handle data review and validation, ensure that field teams understand what is required to maintain compliance with all procedures and practices for collecting data, and address issues as they come up when coordinating with our own field staff and other counties like Hillsborough County, where we do some analysis for them and for us regarding our toxics program. I also handle correspondence with DEP, especially regarding making sure that forms, SOPs, and quality assurance project plans are reviewed and revised as needed. I'm not necessarily interested in the government field itself, but I'm interested in public service and ways to help the community. Environmental work is just more so the environment I was raised and grew up in, and I do find it important. I focus more on public health aspects, which is why I appreciate that there's some overlap with air monitoring, as we're obviously looking out for the health and well-being of the air we breathe for our community. Really, I'm just looking for any way that I can find to utilize my degrees to help the public, whether it's government or not. Beyond my government work, I'm also a self-published fiction author. I'm an avid lifetime reader, so I wanted to have my hand at being able to write some of the content that I enjoy reading so much. It's just always been something I wanted to get myself to at least try my hand at. I published my first book, The Physicist, in December of last year through Draft2Digital which works with other publishing houses, as well as through kindle, so it's available on e-book anywhere and published to print anywhere. I also did a small self-help financial book with some basic guidance when it comes to personal finance, and I'm currently working on a crime fiction book that should be released later this year.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to good work ethic, and a curiosity and commitment to be a lifetime learner. These qualities have helped me advance in my career and continue to grow professionally.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received is that networking matters, so to try and make a point of networking. It's not only about having people who can help you with your career as far as actually getting heard, but also to make sure that you know who you can go to for support when you do have questions. It's a good way to utilize your network and know who your subject matter experts are, essentially, and have them in your pocket.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to other women entering this field is to make sure that you can show your confidence, and don't get intimidated when talking about what you do. Just keep putting your best foot forward.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges in my field are ambiguous language when it comes to making sure that things are done correctly, especially as rules change and get released. Another challenge is communicating that ambiguity with different departments to try and make sure that everything is standardized across our Project Quality Assurance Organization, which for us is the whole state of Florida. As for opportunities, they are somewhat limited since it is a very niche field. However, I do have an upcoming workshop that I get to attend, the Region 4 EPA workshop that happens in May. We do have some opportunities to go and travel to other participating programs and get to see how they're doing it and what they're working on, especially when it's EPA-held, to know what's kind of in the works in the background that might be upcoming.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in my work and personal life are transparency, accountability, and curiosity. These principles guide how I approach both my professional responsibilities and my personal endeavors.
