Her Story
About Christina
Christina Gotsis is an attorney, CPA, and Certified Fraud Examiner based in New York, NY, with 8 or 9 years of experience in the legal industry. She specializes in white-collar crime defense and financial litigation, leveraging her unique combination of credentials to handle complex fraud allegations from government or regulatory agencies as well as recovery matters for those who have been defrauded. Gotsis earned her accounting degree as an undergraduate and completed law school on full scholarships while running a tutoring business to cover additional expenses. Her career began at a big firm in Midtown Manhattan, where she focused on white-collar work and investor recovery, including matters related to the Madoff case. After approximately six years, she transitioned to a mid-sized firm offering more entrepreneurial opportunities and court exposure. Gotsis recently left that role and is now determining her next steps, which may include joining another firm or establishing her own practice to better align with her skills and desire for autonomy. Among her notable achievements, she won a pre-trial motion in federal criminal court in New York that prevented the turnover of her clients' devices on Fifth Amendment grounds. She serves as treasurer of the Hellenic Lawyers Association and as a liaison to the New York chapter of the Women in White Collar Defense Association for the Young Professionals group, and she is also involved with the AICPA.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Christina
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to being true to myself and having my family's support and their vote of confidence when I decide to take on something new. Surrounding myself with people who will have honest conversations, even if they hurt, and being open to accepting feedback.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Move with confidence. Be confident in yourself and remind yourself that you belong there and deserve to be there just as much as anybody else. Be authentic and you will find your place.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is getting newer generation attorneys to not feel so overwhelmed about developing business. It's easy to get stuck servicing other people's business instead of developing your own practice and book of business. Once attorneys start little by little, they'll realize it's not as hard as you think.
