About Christina

Christina Harris serves as Director of the Academic Resource Center at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia. In this role, which she has held for three years, she oversees tutoring services and the Writing Center while teaching classes on academic probation recovery and information literacy. She leads a team of tutors and focuses on building relationships as a connector of people and opportunities within the higher education student success space. Harris has seven years of experience in the field, having previously worked as Director of Career and Life Design in the Career Services Center and as an Outreach and Instruction Librarian. She earned her undergraduate degree from Mary Baldwin University, where she majored in philosophy with a minor in peacemaking and conflict resolution, and later obtained a master's degree in library science from the University of North Texas. Harris is recognized for her community involvement, including leadership roles with the Virginia Library Association as LGBTQIA+ chair, the board of trustees for the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library, the Stanton Pride Leadership Committee, the Shenandoah LGBTQ Center, and the Shenandoah Valley Juneteenth Organization. She has received the Staff Safe Zone Award and the Staff Advocate Award. Harris attributes her success to being in the right place at the right time, feedback from mentors, finding community, and the support of her wife.

01What do you attribute your success to?

Being in the right place at the right time and having feedback from mentors and supervisors. Finding my sense of community and learning to ask for help more. Having a supportive wife who keeps me grounded.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Learning how to negotiate and knowing your worth in business. Never ask for the loaf and not just accept the crumbs. Advocate for yourself and your opportunities.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Have an elevator pitch and talk about yourself in a positive way. Take a philosophy class and work in fast food or retail for at least two weeks to build empathy and respect for every person at every level.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty, integrity, authenticity, respect, finding joy and laughter even in difficult times, meeting people where they are and accepting them.
