Her Story

About Christy

Christy Chambers is a dedicated cancer advocate, nonprofit communications professional, and Stage 4 cervical cancer survivor based in Monroe, North Carolina. Inspired by her own cancer journey, she has spent the past several years empowering others through education, mentorship, and advocacy. As a Cervivor Ambassador, Christy mentors participants in Survivor School, helping fellow survivors develop advocacy skills such as public speaking, community outreach, and legislative engagement to raise awareness about cervical cancer, HPV prevention, and equitable access to care. She also serves as Social Media Coordinator and Content Creator for Teal Diva, supporting individuals affected by gynecologic cancers across North and South Carolina, while contributing her communications expertise to additional nonprofit organizations and working part-time in retail, where she enjoys building meaningful connections within her community.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Christy earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre with concentrations in acting and costuming. Her creative background has shaped her strengths in storytelling, visual communication, adaptability, and problem-solving—skills that have become invaluable in nonprofit advocacy and digital communications. Beyond her professional roles, she volunteers with organizations including Union County Playmakers and Immerman Angels, where she supports fellow cancer survivors through peer mentorship. She is also an avid cook who delights in preparing seasonal meals with fresh local ingredients, an enthusiastic reader and music lover, and enjoys creating intricate three-dimensional paper art that reflects her artistic spirit.

Christy attributes her success to resilience, authenticity, and an unwavering optimism that she describes as being an "Opti-Mystic"—someone who sees the world through the eyes of possibility. She believes meaningful advocacy begins with empathy, honest storytelling, and a commitment to fostering hope and joy in others. Whether mentoring new advocates, creating impactful social media campaigns, or volunteering in her community, Christy is driven by the belief that true influence is measured not by recognition, but by the lives touched, the conversations started, and the hope inspired.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Christy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of optimism, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change. I believe resilience is not about avoiding struggle but about continuing to move forward with purpose despite challenges. Maintaining an optimistic perspective has helped me recognize opportunities, build meaningful relationships, and discover unexpected paths, including my work as a cancer advocate. My experiences have taught me that even the most difficult circumstances can create opportunities for growth, purpose, and positive impact when approached with the right mindset.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to be authentic. I believe that embracing my true self, including my resilience, compassion, and empathy, has allowed me to build genuine relationships and make a meaningful impact. Authenticity is the foundation of effective leadership because people connect with honesty rather than perfection. I also believe that a legacy should be created through the positive influence we have on others every day, not just by what people remember after we are gone.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to focus on making a meaningful difference rather than measuring success by recognition or titles. Leadership is not about having all the answers; it is about offering hope, compassion, and support to others, especially during difficult times. I encourage young women to use their voices, embrace empathy as a strength, and remember that even small acts of kindness and advocacy can have a lasting impact on the lives of others.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in gynecologic cancer advocacy is overcoming misinformation, limited resources, and systemic barriers that prevent equitable access to care. Many advocates also face emotional strain as they repeatedly share deeply personal experiences while supporting others. At the same time, there are tremendous opportunities to create change through education, personal storytelling, and community engagement. By raising awareness about HPV vaccination as an effective form of cancer prevention and using social media to reach broader audiences, we can inspire action, reduce preventable cancers, and move closer to the goal of eliminating cervical cancer in our lifetime.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my work and personal life are honesty, authenticity, and community. I believe meaningful healing and lasting change happen when people support one another rather than facing challenges alone. I value being genuine, even when it means showing vulnerability, because people connect with honesty more than perfection. By leading with integrity, empathy, and a commitment to building strong communities, I strive to create an environment where others feel supported, valued, and empowered.
