Her Story

About Christy

I transitioned from hospitality management into nonprofit advancement because I wanted my work to contribute more directly to people and communities. Since then, I have built a career helping mission-driven organizations strengthen fundraising strategy, secure resources, engage donors and boards, and develop the systems needed for sustainable growth.

Through Three Smiths Advancement, I provide nonprofit strategy, grant development, donor stewardship, communications, training, and organizational capacity-building support. My approach is practical, relationship-centered, and grounded in the belief that strong organizations are built through clear strategy, meaningful partnerships, and consistent follow-through.

Ten minutes with Christy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a strong work ethic, curiosity, and a willingness to keep learning. I prepare thoroughly, ask thoughtful questions, and follow through on what I say I will do.

I have also benefited from relationships with mentors, colleagues, and community leaders who have challenged me to think bigger, sharpen my skills, and stay grounded in the people and organizations I serve.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Know your number, know the value of your experience, and be prepared to advocate for it. Also, do not let the fact that you do not know everything keep you from applying. No one begins a new role with every answer; growth is part of the opportunity.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be curious and commit to being a constant learner. Immerse yourself in new experiences, ask thoughtful questions, and listen closely to what others have to share. The more you understand about people, organizations, and the communities they serve, the more thoughtful and well-rounded you will become as a fundraiser.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in fundraising right now is that rising costs have reduced the amount of disposable income many people have available to give. As a result, nonprofits are competing for the attention of a smaller group of donors with significant financial capacity.

The opportunity is to create meaningful ways for people to engage with an organization beyond making a gift. When people volunteer, attend events, share a message, or build a deeper understanding of the mission, they develop a stronger relationship with the work. When their capacity to give increases, they are more likely to remember how the organization made them feel and become generous, long-term supporters.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are integrity, accountability, curiosity, and relationships. I believe in doing what I say I will do, being honest even when it is difficult, and continuing to learn from the people and experiences around me. I also value being useful; I want my work and my presence to make people, organizations, and communities stronger.
