Her Story
About Christy
I am deeply committed to serving my community through environmental advocacy and education. I currently serve as the Texas A&M International University Alumni Secretary, and I spent about 2 years working with Rio Grande International Study Center, the only non-profit environmental organization in Laredo, Texas, where I placed 18 out of 19 air sensor monitors in Laredo, Texas and El Laredo, Mexico. Before my environmental work, I dedicated over 25 years to education with Laredo ISD. I started my professional career teaching special education students in the social studies department. My last campus was at Early College at A&M International University, where middle school students jump straight into early college and attend TAMIU. As campus coordinator there, I had to be in charge of not only their attendance, their academics, their social services, and their behavioral needs. Sometimes I had to be a counselor. I helped my students with $45,000 of immigration services, and I helped them with housing, with food stamps, you name it. Earlier in my career, I was a probation officer with Webb County. Then I had my children, so I was a domestic engineer for 7 years and stepped out of the workplace because I was a mom first, so I put my career on pause. When my children were in pre-kinder and kinder, I went to substituting because I wanted that flexibility. While I was a substitute, I won Substitute of the Year. Although my title was substitute, I was actually doing reading intervention, and I had my own classroom. About 22 students passed for the first time their state exam. Recently, I ran for Webb County Commissioner Precinct 4 for the very first time. I did lose, but I'm very proud of myself because I had 1,488 residents vote for me, so I know that they want change. I'm not giving up - that might be my next venture, to run for city council.

Ten minutes with Christy
01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The air quality issues in Laredo are a major challenge that I've been working to address. The airplane is very bad in the west side, like, bad. I asked for the incumbent commissioner to sponsor me for an item agenda for the no border wall, for the air quality, which meaning the ethylene oxide and the PM2.5, because that's a big, major thing that we have here in Laredo. Not once did he call me, text me, email me, send me, nothing. That's why I decided to run against him - I said, you know what, now you're gonna face me. Even though I lost, I know that the 1,488 residents who voted for me want change, and I'm not giving up.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being a mom first has always been my priority. When my children were young, I was a mom first, so I put my career on pause for 7 years to be a domestic engineer. Even when I went back to work as a substitute, I wanted that flexibility because my family came first. In my professional work, I'm driven by serving my community and helping others. As a coordinator, I had to help students with everything - immigration services, housing, food stamps, you name it. Sometimes I had to be a counselor. I'm very involved and active with our community, and I believe in fighting for what's right. When I saw that the incumbent wasn't doing anything about the air quality and other issues, I decided to run against him because the community deserves better. I know I'm not giving up on making change happen.
