Her Story

About Chyann

Chyann Johnson is an author whose debut self-published novel, The Fairy of Girlhood Bloom, explores a young girl's coming-of-age experiences. She began writing fanfiction as a child after being inspired by stories read to her by family members and later built an audience on Wattpad before taking the step to publish her own work. Johnson attended Sun Community College where she studied liberal arts, including screenwriting and acting, and she was a founding member of her high school journalism team as well as a participant in the drama club. She is also a member of a book club. Johnson attributes her success to her aunt Norma, who published her own books, and her mother, who encouraged her ambition from a young age. She advises aspiring authors to take their time with their work, noting that she has republished her book multiple times to refine it.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Chyann

01What do you attribute your success to?

My success comes from my aunt Norma who published her own books and inspired me to get my book out there, and my mother who recognized and encouraged my drive and ambition from a young age, making me believe I could make things happen for myself.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My mother admired my drive and ambition from when I was a little girl and told me that when I wanted to do something, I was going to make sure it happened for myself. That stuck with me and helped me believe in my own ambition.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Take your time with your work because I have had to republish my book over 3 times and I'm still finding things to change or add. Definitely take your time with it, but don't feel like it's not possible to do it.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is getting a publishing company's attention because they typically want an already famous author with a lot of eyes on them. The biggest opportunity is things like this feature to promote my book, letting friends and family know I finally did it, and getting my work out there to create conversation.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Ambition is key - I believe I deserve everything I want and surround myself with level-headed people who feel the same. Education is important too, so I'm always learning from films, screenwriters, directors, and real-life situations.
