Her Story

About Clemmie

I've been in management for over 25 years, with the last 10 years at Walmart where I currently serve as a salary manager. I've always been someone who likes to lead and train people - I'm very detailed and like to go by the rules. When I first started at Walmart, I worked in produce as a regular associate, but after just 3 months they asked me to move into management because of my attention to detail. I had already been in management in fast food, but I needed a change of pace, and Walmart has been a great company to grow with. I moved up through the ranks and have been a salary manager for 3 years now. I'm over the front end, which means I manage 30-35 people including 4 team leads. My responsibilities include hiring, training, managing all the money income and outgoing, handling customer complaints, merchandising to make sure we look good and enticing for customers, overseeing maintenance, and helping the total store across all departments. My main area of expertise is customer service. When I first took over the front end, our customer survey scores were at a 2, which is bad. I worked hard to improve that, and we've been holding at a 4 for the last 3 years. My goal is to make it to a 5, which is the highest we can get. We were number one in the market and the region last year, and I'm looking forward to achieving that again this year. I'm very customer-oriented and customer-focused - that's where my expertise really shines.

Ten minutes with Clemmie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my mom. She was a hard worker who worked in the nursing field, and she was a customer service person as well. She loved people, so just watching her as I grew up really inspired me to do some of the things that I do today. She showed me what it means to work hard and care for others, and those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received was to create my goals and to make sure that I reach my goals and stand firm. It's about setting clear objectives for yourself and then having the determination and strength to follow through on them, no matter what challenges come your way.
