Her Story
About Collette
I founded my own company and have been running it successfully while living independently in Boston for the past 12-13 years. What makes my story particularly special is that my mom, who knows about baking but not business stuff, now works by my side in my company - I'm actually her employer and pay her salary. This is especially meaningful because when I was born, nurses told my mom there was no shame in giving her up for adoption. I've become 100% independent, paying my own bills and managing all of my own things. Through my work, I'm now able to hire others and provide them with a safe place to stay and a stable life. My journey has gained significant media attention, and I'm currently working on a documentary with big producers that will tell my whole life story - the ups and downs, the issues with schools, the rejection I faced, and what I'm doing now. The documentary will focus on the critical issue that over 82% of people with disabilities are unable to secure employment, and it will be shown at film festivals, schools, and universities across the United States.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Collette
01What do you attribute your success to?
Never giving up. My mom always taught us to get up again after being knocked down. I would say combined with meditation, exercise and working on mental health and confidence helped me separate from the rejection and stay positive in following up on my dreams and aspirations.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be likeable - be kind.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be willing to work hard and create a mantra - mine was I deserve the best life possible. Also learn yourself and what helps you relieve stress and stay positive.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Having a disabled label is the hardest - reading people's posts making fun of me and not believing I am capable is an everyday personal effort to release from my mind.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty and kindness - thinking about other's and understanding people have different environments that bring different perspectives and anxieties
