Her Story

About Connie

I serve as treasurer of Second Baptist Church, a position I've held since 2004 and continue to this day even though I'm retired from my paying job. I work from home doing everything from paying vendors to creating paychecks for our 5 employees every week, paying all quarterly federal and state tax submissions and reports, and tracking all of our receipts from donations and all of our expenditures on a weekly basis. Prior to this, my paying job was in the field of purchasing and financing. I worked for Cummins Engine (now Cummins Incorporated) from 1992 to 2005, where all of my interactions were international. I had the opportunity to work in the UK for 3 months and traveled to Japan, South America, Germany, and other countries. The international travel was intense and challenging at times, but I did enjoy doing what I did. I have a knack for numbers and accounting, which has taken me a long way throughout my career in purchasing and as treasurer. I love working with numbers and feel like I'm kind of in my world with numbers and spreadsheets. I also do taxes for some family members and have done taxes for co-workers as well, though I've been giving that up and just do it for family now.

Ten minutes with Connie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think I have a knack for numbers and for accounting, and it has taken me a long way throughout my career in purchasing and as treasurer. I love working with numbers. I feel like I'm kind of in my world when working with numbers and spreadsheets. Some people think I'm crazy, but that's just what I'm good at and what I love to do.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I will use the motto of our sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha: what we can do to be in service to all mankind. I try to always do that in my personal life, in my professional life, and in my religious life. I mean, they all kind of merge into one now that I am retired. That's really what it's all about, because we do activities like packing backpacks full of food for the needy once a month without fail, and at our church we support our food pantry in multiple ways.
