Her Story

About Connie

Connie Roebuck is an HIV/AIDS advocate whose life and work have been defined by resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Based in Forrest City, Arkansas, she has lived with HIV for more than 30 years and has spent the past 26 years educating communities, sharing her personal journey, and advocating for greater awareness, understanding, and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. Alongside her advocacy, Roebuck works at the St. Francis County Museum, where she continues to make a positive impact while remaining deeply engaged in community service.

Drawing from both lived experience and extensive self-directed research, Roebuck has dedicated herself to staying informed about HIV, advancements in treatment, and emerging medications so she can provide accurate, up-to-date information through her educational outreach. Beyond her advocacy, she actively serves her local community by maintaining a weekly blessing box, organizing food giveaways, and volunteering her time to mow lawns for those in need. She believes meaningful change begins with compassion, education, and creating opportunities to support others with dignity and respect.

Roebuck attributes her success to her genuine love for people and her desire to serve her community. She believes the greatest challenge facing the HIV/AIDS field today is the persistent stigma that continues to surround the disease despite significant medical progress. Guided by the values of simplicity, kindness, and service, she is committed to breaking down misconceptions and fostering greater understanding through education and advocacy. Her advice to young women entering the field is to be honest with themselves, commit to learning everything they can, and never allow anyone to discourage them from pursuing their purpose.

Ten minutes with Connie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a genuine love for people. Building meaningful relationships, treating others with respect, and leading with empathy have been the foundation of my personal and professional journey. I believe that when you invest in people, foster trust, and help others succeed, lasting opportunities and meaningful impact naturally follow.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to be honest with yourself, commit to continuously learning, and master the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. Believe in your abilities, remain resilient in the face of challenges, and never allow doubt or obstacles placed by others to prevent you from pursuing your goals. Confidence, preparation, and perseverance are key to building a successful and fulfilling career.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is the persistent stigma surrounding AIDS. Despite significant advances in education, treatment, and prevention, misconceptions and discrimination continue to discourage many individuals from seeking testing, care, and support. Addressing this stigma through education, advocacy, and compassionate care remains essential to improving health outcomes and ensuring that everyone affected by HIV/AIDS is treated with dignity and respect.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me in both my work and personal life are simplicity, compassion, and service. I believe in keeping things straightforward, fostering meaningful relationships, and making a positive impact by loving and serving my community. These principles guide my decisions, shape my interactions with others, and inspire me to contribute in ways that create lasting value and support those around me.
