Her Story
About Cortney
I've been working in country clubs for the last 5 years, and I'm incredibly passionate about what I do. I started at Mariner Sands, my previous country club, in food and beverage doing reservations. Once I conquered the reservations and became a lead, I was chosen by the board to be the front face of the clubhouse as the clubhouse administrator. About a month ago, I was appointed to my current role as Executive Administrative Assistant. In this position, I assist the general manager with any administrative tasks he may need, help the members with one-on-one assistance, tend to administration for clubhouse needs, answer the phones, and am responsible for the front desk. My main area of expertise is administration, and my most notable professional achievement is customer service - that one-on-one relationship with the members, I have completely conquered that. What has helped shape me has been good mentorship and good leaders guiding me along the way. Having the confidence of the members has motivated me to keep going and paved the way for me. My long-term goal is to achieve getting my state license for CAM and be of better assistance as an executive administrative assistant to my GM once that is accomplished, furthering my career through education and whatever training is necessary to be able to retire within that position.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Cortney
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to inspiration, motivation, and focus. Every decision that I make, I make it around my daughter. Everything I do is for my daughter. She is my inspiration and motivation, and she keeps me focused on what matters most.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Keep your head up. Shoulders down, chest out, hold your head high. It's a man's world. I would say keep your focus, keep your motivation. And don't stop reaching for the stars, because anything's possible. If I can do it, you can do it. And I'm still climbing the ladder.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge I face is that leadership everywhere I go is a revolving door. My biggest challenge is building relationships with people that end up getting let go. I can never get close enough to somebody for long enough. Whether it's leadership or food and beverage, those are the two departments that it's like revolving - I can never get close enough to somebody for long enough. On the flip side, the opportunities are continuous education that country clubs offer. It's amazing when you get into the administration and leadership roles. Being able to continue to educate yourself and learn and grow is so important to me, and country clubs offer that.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Professionalism is extremely important to me, especially considering where we are. Good leadership and strong work ethic are all important values that guide both my work and personal life.
