Her Story

About Courtney

I currently work as a Sourcing Manager at BCD Meetings and Events, where I source and contract meetings and events for our top account, Johnson & Johnson. My typical day-to-day involves working with clients and hotels for contracting and finding venues to host pharmaceutical meetings, whether it's anything from internal meetings to drug-specific meetings or incentives - all different meeting types. I've been in the hospitality industry for 20 years, starting with over 10 years in hotel sales where I worked operationally to put together meetings and travel for corporate groups. I decided to switch sides and start working for the client because I'm a mom with five children at home in a large blended family, and I needed a flexible work-from-home job that would allow me to still prioritize my career while being present for my kids. BCD thrives on a healthy work-life balance, providing great benefits and time off, which allows me to balance my schedule and still be here for my kids when they get home from school and help with homework. I'm not stranded away at the office from 7 to 7 every day - I have the capability to be present at home, especially if a child is sick, while still getting all of my work done and having calls. Looking forward, I would love to move into operations and oversee a team similar to the one I currently sit on, continuing in leadership which I have a passion for from my previous director and management level experience.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would definitely say the relationships I've built with my clients is absolutely something I have really been strongly achieving. I've built great relationships and a great rapport with them. It's not so much an actual certification or accomplishment, but I have been recognized for my effort in customer service as well as my effort in being a team player. I'm a girl's girl - I'm definitely just very authentic and real. I would encourage anyone to have fun, get to know the clients, and just build relationships, and the more administrative work piece just really comes into play and completes it.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I've had two leaders who have been incredible mentors to me. My first leader was a previous general manager of mine, Matt, who has worked with me for years. He knows me in and out - he knows my strengths, my weaknesses, or I should say areas of opportunity - and has always been in my corner as a sounding board for me. He's very intelligent and has taught me a lot, especially as far as operations go. My current boss, Trina, has also been an amazing mentor. Her and I have such a great, real, authentic relationship. She's so passionate and compassionate for our team, and she pours herself into us and really works with us, teaches us everything, and gives us the space to learn and be ourselves. Even with the trials that we face, she is very real, but she also gives us the space to learn. She's not a typical micromanager - her management style works really, really great, and we all truly thrive on the team just because of how she is as a manager.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I'm a girl's girl - I'm definitely just very authentic and real. I would just encourage her to have fun, get to know the clients, and just build relationships, and the more administrative and work piece just really comes into play. It just completes it. When dealing with the pharmaceutical side, which can be very difficult with a lot of hoops to jump through, you have to be very knowledgeable and keep up with the trends and the changes. You just stay focused and find the joy in it still, keep the energy, and really work with the customer as a team, just really coming together to combat those challenges. It's really just keeping a lot of positivity in there and working with the trending changes.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Dealing with the pharmaceutical side can be very difficult just because there are a lot of hoops to jump through. The pharmaceutical industry as a whole is very complex, so in order to really manage this account, you have to be very knowledgeable and keep up with the trends and the changes. To work with the changes, you just stay focused and find the joy in it still, keep the energy, and really work with the customer as a team, just really coming together to combat those challenges. It's really just keeping a lot of positivity in there and working with the trending changes.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I'm majority a girl mom, so I think just really showing my girls, especially too, the strength and passion we can have while still being a mother, and just identifying with so many different things of life, not just being a mother. Our passion can lie within many different areas. From a personal standpoint, I'm very big into my faith, and so I work with a lot of women and am currently working within an organization that leads women faithfully and just works with them. I think this is a huge piece because it just kind of takes my leadership to the next level. Work-life balance is also incredibly important to me - being able to still keep my passion and my career while still being a mom and being able to be present for my kids was the biggest thing when I made my career transition.
