Her Story

About Courtney

I am an educator and healthcare professional with over a decade of experience in respiratory care, clinical education, and academic leadership, currently serving as Department Chair for Healthcare Specialist at Ivy Tech Community College, a role I have held since August 2021, where I provide academic leadership and program oversight. Prior to my current roles, I served as Registered Respiratory Therapist at Indiana University Health for over seven years, where I provided clinical respiratory care to patients. I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership from Franklin University and hold a Master's in Business Administration from Western Governors University. Across my career in healthcare education, clinical practice, and academic leadership, my work has been driven by a commitment to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals, advancing educational excellence, and supporting student success. Whether I am leading clinical education programs, teaching respiratory care, or providing patient care, I bring a collaborative, student-centered, and results-driven approach that has made a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and patients. I am proud of the work I have done throughout my career and excited to continue advancing healthcare education and leadership at Ivy Tech Community College.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Your reputation is built by what you consistently do, not by what you occasionally achieve.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

As I've grown professionally, I've learned that leadership and success often attract both support and criticism. The best advice I've received is not to let negativity determine my direction. Instead, remain professional, lead with integrity, and let your character and results speak louder than others' opinions.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In healthcare education, one of the biggest challenges is preparing students for an increasingly complex healthcare environment while maintaining high academic standards and improving student success. As programs continue to adopt accelerated formats to meet workforce shortages, educators must balance efficiency with meaningful learning. Students need more than the ability to pass exams. They must develop critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and the ability to apply foundational knowledge in real patient-care settings.
