About Courtney

Courtney Otero serves as a senior talent acquisition consultant at Lucas James Talent Partners, where she has worked for the past five years. With 15 years of experience in the recruiting field, she specializes in recruiting and military spouse support, conducting full-cycle recruiting for clients including Ulta Beauty at their corporate office. Otero earned her Master's in Leadership Communication and her Bachelor's in public relations with a minor in marketing and hotel management from the University of West Florida. She has been recognized as one of the top recruiters at Lucas James Talent Partners at least five or six times over the last five years. As a military spouse who has moved 10 times in 14 years, Otero attributes much of her success to organizations that offer remote work flexibility. She previously served as grant coordinator for the Great Place Spouses Club, managing fundraising efforts that supported scholarships, food banks, and clothing supplies for the military community. Her mentor Paula Bradison taught her the importance of pivoting and adapting to change, advice that has shaped her professional growth.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Courtney

01What do you attribute your success to?

Finding companies that allow remote work as a military spouse has been huge for my success. Lucas James Talent Partners is an amazing organization that is extremely flexible, which helps build an individual's career and mindset.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My mentor Paula Bradison taught me to pivot and go with the flow because things change constantly. She pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, which was tough but made me grow.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You can't give everybody a job and you are going to disappoint people sometimes. Focus on the people you do help and appreciate their reactions when they get the job they really wanted, knowing you are making a difference in their life even if you can't help everyone.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is finding qualified individuals for roles, as sometimes there are too many applicants and sometimes none. AI is taking over and changing everything in recruiting, and everyone is trying to navigate that.
