Her Story

About Courtney

I've been in marketing for my entire career, about 12 years now officially. I'm currently a founding marketer at PromoWise, a B2B demand generation intelligence platform company, and I'm the first female in this role at the company. This is a very heavy male-driven sales demand gen area, so I'm navigating that challenge. When I first came on, they were receiving outside help from an agency, but it was more guidance on what they should do, not necessarily actually implementing different tactics across marketing. I audited everything and essentially realized there really wasn't anything established, so I've been working from the ground up in terms of brand awareness and brand guidelines, our tone of voice, and brand awareness tactics to launching full-fledged demand generation tactics within our own company to target our ICP. I'm doing pretty much all of it across the board. I was a former user experience designer, and I've learned throughout my career to wear many hats and learn many things. Early in my career, I was so focused on being the best of the best in one particular, very specific role, but I learned that it's okay to jump into a different skill set and learn something new, and that's ultimately what led me to this challenging position today.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Big advice is just to not kind of lose yourself. I think it's very empowering to be in this position as a woman, knowing that there's so many strong males around you, but never feeling as though you're inadequate or that you're not an equal. I always feel that I know what I know, and I've been in this industry long enough to feel confident in my skills, so speaking to any male in any industry, at any corporation, just really being empowered in your own knowledge and understanding of what you do know, and challenging conversations as well, and not just coming to, well, yeah, you're right. It's like, no, actually, you're not right, you're incorrect, and I know that for a fact, because I've done X, Y, and Z, and I have experience in this. Even just explaining and sharing your experience, I've noticed is something where, especially in marketing, because there's so many different avenues you can take. Just coming into a particular project with that background, and saying, hey, I can actually help you in this area, because I have experience in it, and not just sitting back and not saying anything, but owning it, and just feeling confident in your skills is definitely big advice that I would say to any woman in the industry.
