About Crystal

I've been working in IT for 8 years and specifically in cybersecurity for going on 6 years. Currently, I work at CGI Technologies and Solutions, a global IT consulting company based out of Canada. As a cybersecurity engineer, I'm responsible for managing cloud infrastructure and doing cloud administration, as well as managing Azure Sentinel, our security incident and event management tool. My team and I manage several other security tools and work closely with internal partners to make sure that security controls and all compliance requirements are met for each individual client. We deal with anywhere from any one of 3,000 systems and currently work with over 200 clients. I work fully remote, though we travel for special things if needed. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from East Tennessee State University, where I graduated in 2017. I'm currently pursuing my Master's of Science at University of Tennessee with a concentration in cybersecurity, and I hope to graduate by December or May of next year. I also hold cloud certifications for both AWS and Azure Fundamentals (AZ900).

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be afraid to ask questions. I was at first, I would say, you're normally kind of nervous, you don't want to seem inexperienced, but that's what you are. So kind of just being able to recognize that and not hinder yourself from asking those questions just because of some emotional response. You want to trust the leaders and trust the experienced folks that you've made a connection with, and run with that. Even in the times now of AI, you've got ChatGPT and all of that, it still, you know, it's not right 100% of the time, even though a lot of people like to think that ChatGPT knows everything. I think it's very important to make connections with other people and not be afraid to ask them questions and get their experience and their input at the end of the day, because they've got hands-on, real-world experience. That's really how you learn.
