For years, I believed success meant working harder. My career in airline management meant constantly proving myself as a young woman. Work was all I knew.

Subsequently, I built a successful business, GovPartners, LLC, and built a career that required long hours, constant attention and frequent travel. There were periods when I was working as much as 20 hours a day. I was ambitious, driven and proud of what I had created.

Then my mother developed dementia.

Suddenly, everything I thought was important had to be reevaluated.

Sometimes You Don't Get to Choose the Timing

Caring for my mother wasn't something I could fit neatly into my calendar between business meetings and travel.

She needed me.

And I knew that I couldn't continue running a business that demanded so much of my time while also being the daughter and caregiver she deserved.

So I made one of the hardest decisions of my life.

I walked away from my successful business.

Not because it was failing.

Not because I was burned out.

Not because I didn't love what I had built.

I walked away because my mother needed me more.

There is a very different kind of grief that comes with voluntarily giving up something you've worked incredibly hard to build. People often talk about the grief that comes with losing someone, but there is also grief in losing a version of yourself.

I went from being an entrepreneur who was constantly moving, traveling and building to becoming a caregiver.

My priorities changed overnight.

Caregiving Changes You

Watching someone you love live with dementia is incredibly difficult.

There is the practical side-the appointments, responsibilities and day-to-day care. But there is also the emotional side of watching pieces of someone you know and love slowly disappear.

And somewhere in the middle of caring for my mother, I had to figure out who I was when I wasn't running my business.

For years, my identity had been tied to what I accomplished.

Now, accomplishment looked very different.

It looked like being there.

It looked like showing up.

It looked like making sure my mother was okay.

It wasn't glamorous. It wasn't particularly entrepreneurial. And it certainly wasn't something I had planned for.

But it mattered.

Then Came Another Chapter

After my mother passed away, I found myself standing at a crossroads.

I could have decided that I had already done enough.

I could have slowed down.

I could have told myself that I was in my 50s and that starting another business was something younger people did.

Instead, I asked myself a different question:

What do I want the next chapter of my life to look like?

The answer was travel.

I have always loved travel, luxury, different cultures and creating memorable experiences. So I decided to take everything I had learned from my first business, combine it with something I genuinely loved, a niche that was not filled, and create something completely different.

That's how Boujee Bahamas was born.

Starting Over in My 50s

Building a business in my 50s has been both exciting and terrifying.

There is a misconception that by the time women reach their 50s, they should be settling down, slowing down or preparing for retirement.

I've never been very good at following those rules.

Instead, I'm building a luxury travel company focused on creating extraordinary experiences throughout the Bahamas. I'm developing partnerships, working with luxury resorts, private aviation and yacht providers, creating travel experiences and continuing to learn something new almost every day.

And yes, I'm doing it in my 50s.

But this time, I'm doing it differently.

I have decades of experience behind me. I've learned what I want-and what I don't want. I've learned that not every opportunity is worth pursuing. I've learned that protecting your time is just as important as making money.

And I've learned that sometimes the most courageous thing you can do is walk away.

Life Has a Way of Rewriting Your Plans

Losing my mother wasn't the only loss I've experienced.

I've also lost all three of my beloved Shiba Inu dogs, my kidlets. I've experienced the kind of losses that force you to confront the fact that time is finite.

Those experiences changed how I look at life.

I don't want to spend the next decade waiting for the "right" time to do the things I want to do.

There may not be a right time.

There is only now.

I'm married to my husband, Kevin, and after 26 years together, we've experienced plenty of chapters-career changes, family responsibilities, moves, loss and now entrepreneurship.

We're still figuring things out.

And I think that's the point.

I'm Not Done Yet

I'm 59.

I am not interested in disappearing quietly into the background.

I'm not interested in being told that my most productive years are behind me.

And I'm certainly not interested in apologizing for wanting more.

More travel.

More adventure.

More business.

More experiences.

More time with the people I love.

More life.

My 50s have taught me that reinvention doesn't have an expiration date.

You can walk away from something you spent years building.

You can put your family first.

You can lose yourself for a while.

You can grieve.

You can start again.

And you can build something entirely different from the life you thought you were going to have.

Maybe that's what getting older is really about.

Not becoming less.

Becoming more of who you were always meant to be.

I'm not aging gracefully.

I'm building boldly.
