Her Story

About Cynthia

I have a passion about helping people, and I love helping and encouraging and really promoting individual growth, so I knew that in the HR field, I would be able to be capable of really putting those skills to work, and it has been amazing. I started my career at Jim's Steel Supply, LLC about 16 years ago and have been here ever since. I see myself retiring from this company. They're a big part of who I am, and working in a family-owned business alongside the owner through three generations has been very amazing. In my leadership role, I've grown from different levels, starting as an assistant and working my way up through generalist, specialist, supervisor, and now holding an HR manager position. As a department of one, I do everything related to HR, in addition to Department of Transportation, safety, and administrative duties. I oversee a big aspect of the company when it comes to these areas. Being on the board of directors for the Kern County SHRM chapter as the Communication and Marketing Director has really helped me promote and advance our chapter at the local level, and now our national chapter is really keeping an eye on us and seeing all the efforts that we promote on education and professional growth and networking in our local area.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would definitely say that the biggest thing to really decide in oneself if this is something that they want to do is kind of looking into what they themselves like and what they enjoy most about themselves. And from there, they can be able to figure out what direction of this career would best fit. I'm a people person. I love seeing individuals thrive and grow, and I know I'm really good individually myself to promote that, so I know that when you look at yourself, and you look into you first, and what your best, where you think you can do the most good, that's going that direction and using that area for HR. And so that's why I chose human resources and helping and promoting and being part of that, because any person that walks into my office, I'm always saying, okay, what's your next goal? What are you looking for? What do you want to do? And helping them really branch out and open themselves up for that.
