Ten minutes with Cynthia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to one core principle: never giving in or giving up on myself. Throughout my career, the most vital piece of advice I’ve embraced is that struggle builds strength. You can never truly know what is meant for you if you don’t keep walking forward to reach the other side.
I live by a simple but transformative truth: stay Positive, remain Patient, and keep Practicing in everything you do. If you do that, you are bound to succeed.
When life took an unexpected turn and I became a stroke survivor, my entire understanding of 'need' shifted. That experience gave me a voice bigger than myself and a drive to build something with lasting impact. I am blessed to have overcome, and I now use my story to guide others through their own storms. I believe God kept me here on purpose, with a purpose—to build up other survivors and remind them of their own greatness.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The trajectory of my life changed when my sister, Yulonda Whisby, asked me one life-altering question: 'Why not you?'Watching her selfless dedication to helping everyone around her became my blueprint for leadership. That sparked my core belief to never give in or give up on yourself. I’ve learned that struggle builds strength, and you can only discover what is meant for you if you keep walking toward the other side.
In my professional journey, I’ve found that if you stay Positive, remain Patient, and keep Practicing, success is inevitable. This dedication to growth was further ignited by my mentor, Dr. Regina Lewis, who inspired me to never stop learning. She taught me the true science behind using my voice effectively—showing me how to reach a crowd in a way that doesn’t just share a story, but truly changes lives.
Today, I stand on the shoulders of these influences, using my voice on purpose and with purpose to remind every survivor of their own inherent greatness.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My primary recommendation is to never give in to giving up on yourself. You have to understand that the hard things are often the most worthwhile things; they are the moments that forge your character and clarify your mission.
Beyond that, I would offer these three pillars for your journey:
- Own Your 'Why Not Me?': When opportunities arise or when challenges feel insurmountable, don't ask why it's happening to you—ask, 'Why not me?' Why shouldn't you be the one to lead, to heal, and to innovate? Your perspective is a unique asset.
- Invest in the Science of Your Craft: It isn’t enough to just have a story; you must learn the science of how to tell it. Whether it’s through mentorship or continued education, never stop being a student. The more you sharpen your voice, the more lives you can effectively change.
- Master the 3P Strategy: In a world that demands instant results, stay Positive, remain Patient, and keep Practicing. Success isn't a sprint; it’s a result of the work you do when no one is watching.
Remember, your 'different ability' is your superpower. Life might take unexpected turns, but as long as you keep walking forward, you will eventually reach the side of the storm where your purpose becomes your platform.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
In the current landscape of professional speaking and advocacy, the shift from "motivation" to "transformation" is creating both high hurdles and incredible openings.
The Challenges
- The Connection Gap: In a digital world, people are over-saturated with content but starving for genuine community. Cutting through the noise to create a visceral, human connection is harder than ever.
- Performative Inclusion: Many organizations discuss accessibility as a "checkbox" rather than embracing radical inclusion—viewing Different Ability as a strategic asset rather than a liability.
The Opportunities
- The Authenticity Premium: As AI and automation grow, the value of a true story and lived experience has never been higher. Authenticity is now the most powerful tool for shifting mindsets.
- The Corporate Wellness Pivot: Companies are finally realizing that neurological health and resilience are essential to leadership. This opens doors to integrate frameworks like the 3P Strategy into high-level professional culture.
- Borderless Impact: Hybrid platforms allow us to build a "support system without borders," connecting survivors and leaders from Colorado to Dubai and Paris in real-time.
The bottom line: The biggest opportunity right now is moving beyond telling people they can overcome and showing them the practical science of how to do it.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My work and personal life are anchored by a single, non-negotiable foundation: Integrity. It is the forefront of everything I do. I believe that walking with integrity means aligning your actions with your purpose, even when the path is difficult.
Alongside integrity, my mission is guided by these essential values:
- Respect & Empowerment: I believe every individual possesses an inherent greatness that deserves to be nurtured and activated.
- Visibility (Being Seen and Heard): My goal is to ensure that those who have felt invisible due to life’s storms—especially survivors—regain their seat at the table.
- Voice: Having a voice is a fundamental right. I use mine to advocate for those who are still finding theirs.
The Strategic Application
We bring these values to life through the 3P Strategy: Positivity, Patience, and Practice. This isn't just a slogan; it is the practical rhythm of how we walk out our purpose every day.
The "Why" Behind the Work
As a stroke survivor, I have gained a deep understanding of the gaps in our current support systems. I’ve realized that we often overlook how mental health and the nervous system dictate the well-being of the entire body.
My commitment to learning and growing in this field is fueled by a spiritual mandate: I was kept on purpose, with purpose. I am dedicated to building up other survivors, bridging the gap in neurological understanding, and reminding them that their story isn't over—it’s just being rewritten for a greater impact.
