Ten minutes with Darlene
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to resilience, perspective, and an unshakable drive to rise beyond my circumstances. I lost both of my parents at an early age and was raised by my aunt and uncle in a challenging environment. Those experiences shaped me, but they never defined my limits, they fueled my determination to create a different path for myself.
I’ve always embraced challenges, especially when someone tells me something isn’t possible. “No” has never discouraged me; it motivates me to push harder, learn more, and continuously strive to be better than I was yesterday.
Equally important, success for me isn’t just personal, it’s about impact. I believe in lifting others as I climb, mentoring and guiding those who will one day take my place and go even further. Creating opportunities for others to shine is one of the most meaningful measures of success to me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Never stop learning; growth is what keeps you from becoming stagnant. Always be willing to push for more, even when the answer is “no.” I’ve learned to see “no” not as rejection, but as “not right now," and that mindset makes all the difference.
Don’t gatekeep your knowledge. Share what you’ve learned, uplift others, and create space for more women to succeed alongside you. There is power in collaboration and community.
Just as important, protect your mindset. Don’t let negativity or other people’s doubts live rent-free in your head; it will only slow you down. Stay focused, stay positive, and keep moving forward with confidence.
And through it all, carry yourself with strength and grace. A simple smile can go a long way, it reflects resilience, confidence, and the ability to rise above any challenge.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I always keep my door open for conversation, guidance, and support. I’m deeply committed to sharing resources...especially grants, scholarships, and opportunities...for young women entering STEM, and that’s something I will never stop doing.
My advice is simple: take up space and don’t wait for permission to belong. Be curious, ask questions, and never stop learning. This industry is constantly evolving, and your willingness to grow will set you apart.
Don’t be discouraged if you’re the only woman in the room at times, see it as an opportunity to lead, to represent, and to open the door wider for those coming behind you. Seek out mentors but also become one as you grow.
Most importantly, believe in your voice and your value. You earned your place. Stay persistent, stay confident, and remember that every challenge you face is preparing you for something greater.
And when you succeed, reach back and help the next woman rise. That’s how we create lasting change.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is the continued underrepresentation of women in STEM and leadership roles. Women are still significantly outnumbered in technical spaces, and we often see gaps in mentorship, sponsorship, and access to advancement opportunities. There is also the ongoing challenge of bias...both conscious and unconscious...which can impact hiring, promotion, and how women’s contributions are recognized.
Another challenge is keeping pace in an industry that is evolving so quickly, especially with the rise of AI and emerging technologies. It requires constant learning, adaptability, and confidence to continue stepping forward in spaces that are still traditionally male-dominated.
At the same time, the opportunities are powerful. We are in a moment where innovation is accelerating, and there is more awareness than ever about the need for diverse voices in technology and problem-solving. Companies are beginning to recognize that inclusion drives better outcomes, creativity, and impact.
For women especially, this is an opportunity to not only enter the field but to shape i; by bringing new perspectives, leading with purpose, and actively creating pathways for those coming behind us. I see my role as both participating in that progress and helping to build the bridge for the next generation of women to thrive and lead.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important values in my life are family, mental health, and service to others, especially seeing my students succeed. My family keeps me grounded and reminds me of what truly matters. Supporting my students and celebrating their success is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
My mental health is also a top priority. I’ve learned that I can’t pour into others if I’m not taking care of myself, so I make time for things that bring me peace and balance, reading, running, crocheting, and gardening all help me reset and stay centered.
And honestly, baseball is a huge part of my joy...baseball is life for me. I love watching my boys play and being present for those moments. It’s something that brings me happiness, connection, and a sense of calm outside of everything else.
At the core of it all, I value growth, balance, and showing up fully...in my work, for my students, and for the people I love.
