About Danielle

She also played a key role in launching and continues to lead the Women with ADHD initiative, developing trusted educational resources and a dedicated podcast channel that addresses the unique needs of this underserved community.

Before joining Understood.org, Burford built a strong foundation in marketing and communications through roles in academic publishing with Jones & Bartlett Learning and Emerald Publishing. There, she led integrated marketing campaigns, developed brand awareness strategies, managed product launches, and crafted targeted communications for educators, researchers, authors, and professional audiences. These experiences strengthened her ability to blend strategic thinking with compelling storytelling, skills that continue to define her approach to lifecycle marketing today. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from the College of the Holy Cross, where she developed the communication expertise that has become central to her career.

Burford attributes her success to the power of words to create authentic human connections and believes that thoughtful, audience-centered communication is the foundation of effective marketing. She encourages young professionals, particularly women entering the industry, to seek out trusted mentors, advocate confidently for themselves, and remain adaptable in an environment shaped by constant technological innovation. Committed to continuous learning, she regularly expands her knowledge through professional development, including coursework focused on artificial intelligence and emerging marketing technologies. Outside of her professional responsibilities, Burford serves on her local neighborhood board, reflecting her dedication to community engagement and making a meaningful impact both professionally and personally.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Danielle

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've always believed that words have the power to connect people. That belief has guided every step of my career. After graduation, I began in academic publishing before transitioning into marketing. Today at Understood.org I work on user retention and helped launch the Women with ADHD initiative, creating resources and a podcast channel for an underserved community.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I think it's really important to find a mentor. I really flourished when I found someone who I trusted and was able to bounce things off of. Also, be bold and ask for what you think you deserve. Don't be afraid to ask.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Find a mentor who believes in your potential. Be confident when advocating for yourself, whether discussing compensation or pursuing new opportunities. Don't be afraid to ask for what you're worth. Careers don't have to follow a straight line.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Maintaining trust is a big challenge as AI-generated content becomes common and privacy changes reshape audience interactions. Authenticity matters more than ever, building genuine relationships through transparency and empathy.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Staying curious and continuously learning by taking courses on AI and marketing trends. Making meaningful information accessible. Contributing to my local community through the neighborhood board.
