Her Story
About Danielle
I've been in hospitality since 2004, over two decades now. I work at San Jose Resorts International in Montego Bay, Jamaica as Senior Manager of Interior Design on the Design Central team. We guide architects, interior designers, and art curators to create products that authentically represent Sandals and Beaches resorts while meeting operational challenges. My path started with a bachelor's in interior design from the Art Institute of Lauderdale, then nine years in full turnkey designer procurement for hotels, five years at a boutique firm focused on Caribbean design and resorts, followed by time on cruise ships where I shifted from consultant to client side. This role came unexpectedly when I applied for a job back home in Jamaica, allowing me to bring my global experience home.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Danielle
01What do you attribute your success to?
As a woman in hospitality, especially a minority woman, I attribute my success to trusting my instincts and gut, being authentically who I am, and staying strong-willed and opinionated. My parents raised me to be strong, which gave me endurance. Being curious, never accepting the status quo, challenging things, asking questions, and staying authentic have been key.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would say to listen and observe your surroundings. Remember there's always something to learn and you don't know everything. When I started, my dad told me I couldn't pay for the experience I was getting, which shaped me for longevity even if I didn't realize it at the time. I became a unicorn because I know the industry, vendors, design, curating, procuring, and executing.
