About Danielle
Danielle Heavin has spent the past 13 years building a career as a scientist in veterinary diagnostics research. After earning her marine biology degree from Southern Maine Community College in 2010, she transitioned from an initial interest in field biology to laboratory work, beginning with an internship facilitated by her aunt and later joining IDEXX. Currently, her work focuses on protein purifications, DNA extractions, and histology. She credits her professional success to the guidance of her mentors, particularly the great women she has worked for, and emphasizes the importance of integrity and trusting colleagues. Heavin advises aspiring professionals, especially young women, to pursue what makes them happy and to go for opportunities they truly desire, noting that her own path has strengthened her drive to achieve.

01What do you attribute your success to?
A lot of it was my mentors. I had a lot of great people, great women that I worked for. And without their help along the way, I don't think I would be necessarily where I am now.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Probably just to do what makes you happy. I kind of fell into this a little bit. I've just continued it because I really enjoy doing it.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just go for it, if it's something that you really want to do. I can't imagine not having the job I have now. Everything that I have tried so far has made my drive even more to achieve those things.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges would be probably opportunities in general. There is a lot of competition. A lot of people applying for these positions right now.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Just integrity, and working with people that you can trust. That goes a long way in life and at work.
