Her Story
About Danielle
I've been working in editing for 3 years, and I'm currently with Night Media, editing the History, Books, and Wine podcast. I edit episodes weekly, create show notes, and develop social media and email templates for authors being interviewed. I've been in this role for 2 or 3 months. Before this, I worked in video editing through various internships, including at a news channel a couple years ago. I got into this field because I was very interested in video production and wanted to broaden my horizons by trying every different type of media. I reached out to the podcast to see if they needed someone to do the editing and producing, and they were looking to hire someone since the host had been doing it themselves. I'm also a full-time student at USF, majoring in Humanities and Cultural Studies with a concentration in Film and New Media Studies and minoring in Mass Communications. I balance school with working a couple days a week on editing. After graduation in Fall 2027, I want to continue editing and get into more production, ideally starting at an agency in Tampa, which has great opportunities in mass communications.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I would definitely give that to my parents. Both my parents have supported me very, very much throughout this entire time. I think sometimes families don't look that highly upon media jobs and video production jobs, but this entire time, my parents have just been like, well, this is something that you're interested in, of course you should pursue it, because yes, when you're working, it is work, but it should be something that you enjoy so that you still enjoy your life. And then also, all of the schools that I've gone to have had opportunities that have given me chances to pursue this career. When I was in high school, we had a video production program, which was an amazing opportunity that I could go into and build my portfolio, because we would make videos that I could have. And then also at USF, there's been a bunch of different programs that I've been able to go into to see what I want to narrow down my field into, and then also just keep building my portfolio and resume and keep getting better, because I have time to practice.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
It would probably be the thing with my parents, where they're saying that you do have to understand that your job is going to be a lot of work, but if you put in that work, you will be successful in your life. I have not had to worry too much about failing and stuff, because I put in so much work that I know that it will end up working out for me, and I will be successful in my life.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would definitely say that just take the opportunities that are given to you, because those are all learning times, and there are times to build your portfolio and everything, even if it's something that you're not super big on. Like, I wasn't super big on the news channel, but I definitely wanted to go in it to broaden my horizons and get my name out there. I think a really good thing is also networking. I did a conference a couple years ago, and that was really big on networking, and just getting your name out there, and having things to be able to put your name to, and especially things that are good representation of you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I would say the biggest challenge is finding the right opportunities and really narrowing down what you want to pursue in the future, because a lot of stuff with video production and editing, it's a lot of freelancing, and it's not always one job that you're gonna stick with for a long time, because there are a lot of temporary things. I think the opportunity that I got with the podcast is very good for me, because that's something that she wants to continue for a long time, so that keeps me in a job for a long time. But finding the right opportunities has definitely been a challenge.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I would say that one of my biggest values is definitely respect. I very much want to show respect to others, and then I also want the things that I create to be respectful. I wouldn't put myself in a position where something I'm putting out, something I'm editing is not a good representation of my character. I would just make sure I'm not taking those types of jobs, because that's my name on there. I'm not gonna have that be something that's disrespectful or inappropriate. And then also, I think having a good relationship with your team and everything, because in the past, the teams that I've worked with, we've all had really good relationships. I'm also really big into, I will ask for help if I need help, and I also love helping others that ask me for help. So just having a good team environment is very important to me, too.
