Her Interview

Ten minutes with Danya

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say the people that have actually come before me, like my mom showing me what endurance and perseverance looks like, to my favorite educators like Mrs. Hayes who made learning fun and shared that whenever you put your name on something it better be right. My academics, service to the community, and connection to others became important during my time at Howard High School of Technology where educators poured into my family and continue to be part of my life today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

A marathon, not a race. My advisor Dr. Bond shared that with me during my journey becoming Dr. Woods during COVID, reminding me that my journey doesn't have to be at the same pace as my classmates and to put a date to my goal and stick to it.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Remember that every day is a new day. Sometimes the work might not show immediate results and you might face challenges, but always go into each day with a fresh mindset. Take care of yourself so you can show up and give your best. Do more of the things your favorite teachers did that made a positive impact.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Community, connection, and collaboration. I value being a connector who brings resources to solve problems. Collaboration is essential because you can't get things done by yourself, and building relationships helps people trust and follow you.
