About Darci
Darci Shannon is a Member Services Advisor with the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), where she has worked since 2024. Based in Kahoka, Missouri, United States, she supports NHLA members by helping promote their businesses and strengthen engagement across the hardwood industry. In her role, she focuses on member relations, sales support, and industry outreach, connecting daily with professionals across the forest products and lumber sector. Her work also extends into industry advocacy through her involvement with the Hardwood Federation, where she participates in efforts to communicate the needs and challenges of the hardwood industry at the national level. Darci’s career path blends education, sales, and long-standing exposure to the lumber industry. Before joining NHLA, she worked in the hardwood sector with a saw-related company beginning in 2020, and previously spent several years as an educator, teaching while also coaching sports. Her connection to the industry runs deep, as she grew up in a family that owned a lumber yard, giving her early familiarity learning alongside her father. She is also active in professional communities, serving as a board member of the Midwest Saw Filers Association, where she supports education and training initiatives within the industry. A graduate of Missouri Baptist University with a Bachelor of Professional Studies in Education, Darci is known for her strong interpersonal skills and people-first approach to her work. She attributes much of her professional effectiveness to her ability to communicate and build relationships, shaped mostly by her mother and her small-town upbringing and early experiences interacting with diverse individuals. Outside of her professional responsibilities, she is actively involved in her local community and school activities, including sports programs, while balancing a busy family life centered around her children’s athletics and activities.

Ten minutes with Darci
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success at NHLA to the support and confidence of my supervisor, John Hester, who believed I would be a strong fit for the organization. Having already been a member of NHLA prior to joining the team gave me a valuable foundation and deeper understanding of its mission. Since then, I have been able to grow professionally alongside the organization and continue developing my contributions over time.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to not stop until I reach my goals and even then, set new ones and do not stop. It reminded me to stay persistent, focused, and committed, even when faced with challenges or setbacks.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The best advice I would give to young women entering my industry is to take the time to meet people and listen to their stories. In the hardwood industry, many individuals come from family-run businesses and have been involved in the trade for most of their lives. It’s a close-knit community where people often leave and return, but more often than not, they have deep-rooted connections to the industry. Building relationships and understanding those backgrounds helps you integrate, learn, and truly succeed in an environment where everyone tends to treat one another like family.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges are that currently we face a lot of downsizing in our industry and people not understanding the importance of real hardwood.I'm part of the Hardwood Federation, and we will actually be going to Washington, D.C. in a couple of weeks on behalf of the hardwood industry, meeting with senators and explaining our story and how certain things affect us in our industry. This will be my second trip.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The most important value to me in both my work and personal life is friendship. I value building genuine relationships, supporting others, and fostering trust and connection in everything I do.
