About Darlene

Darlene Ardrey serves as an Operational Lead in facilities with nine years of experience, representing Gastonia, North Carolina. She began her career in the customer support center, earning recognition from higher management for her interactions with technicians and staff, which led to her advancement into operations. In her role, she monitors building automations to ensure proper functioning of systems such as HVAC, smoke detectors, generators, and other equipment across multiple buildings nationwide. Ardrey earned a Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice from Pfeiffer University while balancing responsibilities as a single mother with three children, and she has taken advantage of extensive on-the-job training in areas like HVAC and building maintenance. She notes that her field is male-dominated, requiring her to learn technical skills comparable to those of technicians, but she credits company-provided training for her success.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Never give up, even when it's hard. As a woman in a male-dominated technical field, never give up. Always take advantage of any kind of training, be ahead of it, never get intimidated, and give it your best.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Research it, make sure it's something that they're comfortable with and want to do. If you're not technically savvy or one that likes to tinker, it could be overwhelming. If you like to explore and learn, then that's the field to go in. Just do your research.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

It's a male-dominated field. As a facilities operation lead, you have to learn all parts of building automation like HVAC, smoke detectors, generators, and be able to help technicians fix equipment. It's tough but the company provided training.
