About Darlene
Darlene Duran is a Labor Compliance Manager based in Los Angeles, California, currently working with Build Group, Inc. In her role, she oversees labor compliance across public works construction projects throughout Southern and Northern California. She works closely with general contractors to ensure all required compliance reporting is accurately completed so that project funding can be properly released. Her work supports a range of developments, including low-income housing, senior housing, and community-focused infrastructure intended to address housing needs.
With over 15 years of experience in the construction industry, Darlene’s career began in project accounting before transitioning into field administration and labor compliance. She was introduced to the compliance field through hands-on project support and quickly developed a strong interest in ensuring fair labor practices. Her background also includes work with large developers and architectural firms, as well as international project experience in Saudi Arabia, which broadened her understanding of large-scale construction operations and funding structures. She holds a background in Business Management from UC Irvine.
Throughout her career, Darlene has focused on promoting fair wage practices and preventing labor and wage theft on public works projects. She is known for helping subcontractors and project teams understand complex compliance requirements and for ensuring projects remain in good standing for funding and execution. Looking ahead, she plans to expand her professional impact by launching a consulting business, where she aims to provide guidance in labor compliance and support organizations navigating public works requirements.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the personal challenges I have overcome. After experiencing a tragedy that led to a long period of severe depression and inability to work, I reached a turning point where I chose to move forward and rebuild my life. By taking small, intentional steps each day, learning again, and pushing myself to re-engage with the world, I found the strength and courage to recover and ultimately become a productive and successful individual.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would advise young women entering my industry to take a clear and honest look at what they truly want to do and pursue it with intention. Do not let fear or self-doubt create obstacles that are not actually there, as these perceived limitations can hold you back from your goals. Build a strong support system around you, and set simple, realistic daily goals to keep yourself focused and motivated. If you don’t accomplish everything in one day, don’t view it as failure—carry it forward, prioritize it, and continue building step by step. Over time, those small, consistent actions will lead to meaningful achievement.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
In my field, some of the biggest challenges include a lack of knowledge, limited access to information, and unclear direction, which can make it difficult for professionals to fully navigate available opportunities. At the same time, there are significant opportunities, as it is a large and growing industry with substantial nationwide work in public works and access to various funding sources. These conditions also create space for continued learning, professional growth, and the potential to eventually work independently, such as through consulting.
