About Darlene
Darlene Johnson-Cargill is a retired journalist and accomplished public relations professional based in Beachwood, Ohio, with more than 27 years of experience in communications, media relations, corporate affairs, and community engagement. She began her career as a journalist for a Cleveland newspaper, developing a strong foundation in storytelling, writing, and connecting with diverse audiences. Following the newspaper’s closure, Darlene transitioned into corporate communications, where she built a successful career managing public relations, external affairs, and community initiatives.
During her tenure in corporate America, Darlene served in several key communications roles, including editor of an employee magazine, where she managed the publication process from concept development through completion and crafted executive communications, including the CEO’s letters to employees. As an Area Manager, she strengthened relationships with community leaders, elected officials, mayors, and public stakeholders throughout Northeast Cuyahoga County, representing organizational interests while addressing public affairs matters and fostering meaningful partnerships.
Darlene holds a degree in External and Print Communications from Cleveland State University and has remained dedicated to communication, education, and community service throughout her career. In retirement, she continues to share her passion for storytelling as the author of three children’s books: What’s in the Bottle, Grampa Was Bullied, and A Home for Saabe Dog. She also spent five years as a substitute teacher in the Orange School District, continuing her commitment to inspiring and supporting the next generation through education and creative expression.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to trust themselves and their abilities. Do not allow others to define your worth or limit your potential. Believe in yourself, embrace your unique strengths, and have the confidence to pursue your goals with determination and purpose. Building a successful career requires resilience, self-awareness, and the courage to stay true to who you are.
