Her Story

About Dava

Dava Watson, based in Kaneohe, Hawaii, has built early expertise in marine biology and environmental sustainability through hands-on research and internships. Over three years as a paid intern at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, she contributed to two published papers, one as co-author and one as first author, while conducting research on whales and data analysis. In addition to her scientific work, Watson gained legal exposure as a summer clerk extern at the First Circuit Court in Hawaii and held roles as a gymnastics coach and sushi restaurant worker. She recently graduated from University Laboratory School, where her parents are also alumni, and is preparing to attend Northern Arizona University Honors College. There she will major in accounting and minor in laws, rights, and justice, with the ultimate goal of becoming an environmental lawyer who uses scientific evidence to drive meaningful change. Watson attributes much of her drive to her parents, who adopted her from Mongolia, and she has demonstrated commitment to community through three years of weekly volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Hawaii, assisting with cleaning, cooking, and organizing.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Dava

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would attribute a lot of the success to my parents, because they actually adopted me from Mongolia when I was [AGE]. So, I came from nothing, and being able to have parents who always supported me in everything I did and pushed me to try different things is really, like, I wouldn't have been anywhere, like, at all.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice would probably be don't be afraid of change. Don't be afraid to step up and be ambitious. ... Just be present, and step in that room.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't be intimidated by men. ... don't compare yourself to men, make your own story.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is people don't take you seriously when you're so young, but it's kind of a step to prove that you know what you're doing, you belong here.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Doing something that's really gonna change the world in a better way. ... leave a place better than it was ... how can you be successful for everybody? ... Continue to support future generations
