From the Farm to School program, which teaches students about sustainability and nutrition, to Career and Technical Education programs that provide hands-on experiences with local businesses and colleges, she has consistently focused on creating learning environments that are both engaging and relevant. Dawn’s expertise is recognized beyond her district through her contributions to statewide and national education initiatives, including serving on the NYSED Civic Readiness Task Force and as a member of the AASA National Governing Board. She holds a Ph.D. in Administration and Curriculum Development from St. John’s University and a Master’s in Social Studies Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her work has earned numerous accolades, including awards from the City of Yonkers and the New York State Assembly, highlighting her commitment to excellence, innovation, and student success.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience and perseverance. Throughout my career, I’ve faced challenges that required adaptability and determination, and I’ve learned that staying committed to my goals and maintaining focus through obstacles has been key to achieving meaningful results.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to focus on building strong relationships with students. When students feel seen, valued, and supported, they are more motivated to learn, take risks, and grow both academically and personally.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to seek out mentors—people you admire who can guide and inspire you. Build a strong network of women who will support, challenge, and encourage you along the way. And above all, cultivate resilience, as it will help you navigate challenges and stay focused on your goals.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in education today is securing sufficient funding to support programs and initiatives that improve student outcomes. At the same time, there is a tremendous opportunity to bring in innovative approaches—whether through technology, instructional methods, or community partnerships—that can enhance learning and better prepare students for the future.

The values that guide me both professionally and personally are staying true to myself, showing compassion for others, and prioritizing my relationships with family and friends. These principles shape the way I lead, make decisions, and connect with the people around me.
