Ten minutes with Dawn
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Work smarter instead of harder. I had really good mentors like Sarah Becker who taught me to read and find answers myself so I remember them better instead of asking repeatedly.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Nursing goes beyond bedside care. There are other aspects like legal nursing, forensic nursing, or reimbursement work. Start in patient care for clinical judgment but know you can divert when physical limitations arise.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Shortage of nurses because the field is being devalued, making it hard to get financial aid or recognition as professionals. Government policies like the schizophrenia audit are unfair and affect care.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Taking ownership by taking responsibility, finding solutions, supporting teams, and continuously improving quality outcomes. Ensuring revenue supports patient care and staff without compromising ethics.
