About Dawn
Dawn Brockman is the Dean of Students at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, where she oversees student life, housing, security, accessibility, mental health, discipline, and advocacy. With a career spanning more than 20 years in public education, Dawn has dedicated herself to student leadership, engagement, and inclusive campus culture. She previously served as Executive Director of the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils, advising high school student councils across the state, and has held teaching positions in leadership and Latin at several Oklahoma high schools. Dawn’s work is grounded in student advocacy and accountable leadership, emphasizing structures that connect students to campus life, alumni, and community engagement. In addition to her higher education role, she serves on the Norman Public Schools Board of Education and is actively involved in supporting female candidates through initiatives like Sally’s List. Dawn is recognized for advancing innovative policies in education, including Oklahoma’s first ICE policy at the district level, and has received numerous fellowships and honors, including induction into the University of Oklahoma Jeanine Rainbolt College of Education Alumni Hall of Fame. An attorney with a Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College of Law, Dawn combines her legal expertise with decades of experience in teaching, student leadership, and nonprofit administration. She has presented workshops at national education conferences and facilitated charitable initiatives supporting children and families, reflecting her commitment to equity, advocacy, and meaningful community impact.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a commitment to student advocacy and inclusive, accountable leadership, focusing on creating structures that connect students to campus life and foster meaningful engagement.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Everything you are doing now is preparing you for your next role.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would advise young women to see their college major as a foundation, leverage core skills across various roles, and stay open to unexpected opportunities that align with their passions.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
A huge shift is coming in what we traditionally have defined as evidence of learning in Higher Ed. If we are open to change and remain agile in our pursuits, we can be the central catalyst in the future of learning.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I’ve found that focusing on my integrity, mindset and attitude, makes decision making easy regardless the blowback.
