About Dayami
Dayami Mcpherson is a Spanish teacher and professor with more than 25 years of experience in the field of education. Born and raised in Cuba, she earned her bachelor's degree in education in her home country before moving to the United States, where she has taught for 15 years. Mcpherson currently serves as a world language teacher at a premier high school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ranked number one in the city and state, where she instructs AP Spanish and Spanish honor classes at various levels. She enhances learning through cultural immersion by organizing international student trips, such as to Barcelona and Madrid, and by incorporating cooking and food experiences from Spanish-speaking cultures into her lessons. In addition to her high school role, Mcpherson has taught as a professor for 10 years at two colleges in the Philadelphia area: Chestnut Hill College, where she helps educators obtain certifications, and Esperanza College, where she teaches Spanish. She holds a master's degree from Chestnut Hill College and is an active member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Mcpherson has been recognized as Teacher of the Month in 2020 and Teacher of the Year at her previous school.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to being original with relevant ideas and inspiring my students. I love to read and transmit positivity, happiness, and real-life lessons on how to be happy and deal with difficult times through my teaching.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be patient, and do everything with love.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be a lifelong learner, always open to learn every day, show curiosity, and remember it is okay to make mistakes. Be a great observer of your students, know their passions and interests to make connections, and give them opportunities to lead based on their interests.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is teaching Spanish as a second language while continuing to improve my own English, but it has been inspirational as we learn together. The greatest opportunity is delivering my experience and maintaining an unstoppable attitude of confidence and eagerness to learn.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Being flexible, listening to others for understanding, and doing everything with love and passion. Passion is everything for me and has been a great pillar in my career.
