About Deana
Deana Spencer is an accomplished educational and nonprofit leader who serves as President and CEO of Holy Family Ministries in Chicago. With more than 25 years of experience in education, Deana has dedicated her career to advancing opportunities for children, families, and communities, particularly in underserved urban neighborhoods. Her leadership journey includes roles in early childhood education, policy, nonprofit management, and school leadership, reflecting her commitment to creating family-centered programs that promote academic excellence, spiritual growth, and effective leadership. In 2026, Deana also received an honorary doctorate in Christian leadership in recognition of her years of service and impact.
Throughout her career, Deana has been deeply involved in community development and educational advocacy. During her tenure at Holy Family Ministries, she progressed through several leadership roles before becoming Head of Schools and ultimately President and CEO. She also serves as a Board Trustee of the Erikson Institute and has contributed to organizations focused on early childhood education, restorative justice, family literacy, and community empowerment. Deana’s leadership is grounded in faith, integrity, dedication, and a belief in lifting others as she climbs, while building diverse teams that reflect and serve the communities in which they work.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Deana values creativity, culture, wellness, and family. She enjoys visiting art galleries and artisan markets, taking spa days, and spending meaningful time with her family. Her passion for connecting people and communities is also reflected in the upcoming 2026 documentary, Holy Family: A Bridge Between Two Communities, which highlights the work and mission of Holy Family Ministries. Through her professional leadership, community involvement, and personal commitment to service, Deana continues to build bridges, inspire others, and create lasting opportunities for children and families.

I attribute my success to influential people, especially women and trusted mentors, who have guided and supported me throughout my journey.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is, “As you climb, lift others up.” As you build your success, help others rise with you.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Surround yourself with smart, like-minded people who genuinely have your best interests at heart. Stay true to yourself and follow whatever path is right for you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The cost of education can be a challenge, but there are many opportunities for growth through mentorship and leaders of color who are committed to paying it forward.

Faith, integrity, and dedication are the core values that guide me in both my personal and professional life.
