DeAnna Smith, D.Min., is a dedicated healthcare and pastoral care professional with over 25 years of experience in the medical and spiritual care fields. Currently serving as the Director of Pastoral Care at MW, she brings extensive expertise in chaplaincy, spiritual direction, and community engagement. Throughout her career, DeAnna has skillfully balanced administrative leadership with hands-on ministry, supporting patients, staff, and families while fostering a culture of compassion and care within healthcare settings. Her journey in ministry began with dual bachelor’s degrees in 2014, followed by a Master of Divinity from Beeson Divinity School in 2020, and culminating in a Doctor of Ministry from Winebrenner Theological Seminary in 2024. Alongside her academic achievements, she has served in multiple chaplaincy roles, including Chaplain Resident at Brookwood Baptist Health, and has actively contributed to team leadership, staff mentoring, and patient-centered spiritual care. DeAnna’s impact extends beyond her professional roles. She was selected as one of six women to appear in a documentary highlighting women in chaplaincy, reflecting her commitment to leadership, advocacy, and representation in her field. Her work continues to combine faith, education, and service, helping to guide both individuals and organizations toward greater spiritual and emotional well-being.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my compassion and dedication to helping others, and I was inspired to enter this field because I’ve always felt called to healing ministries.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to submit to the Lord's leading. I define success as being in God's will. Throughout my journey, the late Pastor Randal Ray has been an inspiring mentor, guiding me with wisdom and encouragement.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to take care of yourself and stay spiritually grounded.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The challenges in my field revolve around being able to met the demand for pastoral care. For every care recipient I see, there are dozens more waiting for someone to come alongside them with support and encouragement. That challenge is also an opportunity to minister to those who are hurting.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important value to me in both my work and personal life is to treat others the way I want to be treated.
