Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I have been an educator since 1986 and currently serve as an adjunct mathematics professor at Howard Payne University. To me, success is measured in relationships. Whether teaching a foundations course or college algebra, I strive to connect with students by explaining concepts through analogies that resonate with their world, such as music, so they feel truly seen. Some of my proudest accomplishments, including being voted Teacher of the Year by students for two consecutive years and presenting at the state CAMT convention, reflect this philosophy. Even as I complete my doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, my focus remains unwavering: teaching requires a genuine heart. My signature “Huaaaaa!” shared with students is more than a vocal exclamation; it is my way of saying, “You are my student, I love you, and I am so proud of you.”

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering education is to be truly called to the work. Love your students even through their resistance, hold them accountable, and help them earn their success. The gratitude and respect from your students will naturally follow.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me in both my work and personal life are connection, dedication, and a genuine love for learning. I believe in fostering relationships, inspiring growth, and approaching challenges with heart. Outside the classroom, I nurture my creativity and balance through hobbies such as wood burning, playing drums, guitar, and keyboard, and singing in a choir, which bring me joy and continue to fuel my passion for teaching.
