About Debbie
Debora Fackey serves as the Science Lab Laboratory Coordinator at Miami University in Hamilton, Ohio. In this role for the past 18 years, she prepares laboratories for the science departments, covering physical and biological sciences including chemistry, physics, biology, and microbiology. With 24 years of experience in the education industry overall, Fackey brings a strong academic foundation to her work. She earned a vocational degree in electronics right after high school, followed by an associate's degree in natural science and a Bachelor of Arts in Botany from Miami University, where she majored in botany. Her areas of expertise include plants and botany, as well as all areas of science, where she manages labs, cares for animals and invertebrates, and supports a wide range of scientific instruction. Fackey attributes her professional success to hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn new things. She advises choosing a career one enjoys and believes that one can accomplish anything set in mind. In her personal and professional life, family, friendships, and relationships with people are most important to her. She is an advocate for animal welfare and has donated to organizations including the North Shore Animal League, Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Miami for the Veterans Department. Among challenges in education, Fackey notes the need to advocate for equal pay between females and males, while highlighting opportunities in STEM fields, particularly as Miami University moves toward a polytechnic focus.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to hard work and dedication, and a willingness to learn new things.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to choose something that you enjoy to do as a career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You can accomplish anything that you set your mind to.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
A challenge in education is equal pay, where pay has not been the same for females to males, and we have to advocate to make sure we get paid equivalently. Opportunities include lots in the STEM area, with Miami University going towards the Polytechnic and gearing towards more science-based education.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family is super important to me, friendships, my people. People are most important, and the relationships that you make with them.
