Deborah P. Ashton, PhD, EdD, is an organizational psychologist and executive advisor specializing in governance, leadership development, and multigenerational workplace culture. Based in the Greater Chicago area, she serves as President of Planet Perspective, where she partners with organizations to strengthen leadership pipelines, enhance board effectiveness, and translate culture and human capital risks into measurable business strategies. Her work focuses on aligning people strategy with long-term organizational performance and sustainable growth. With more than four decades of experience in organizational psychology and human capital leadership, Dr. Ashton has advised Fortune 500 companies, healthcare systems, and academic institutions on diversity, inclusion, pay equity, succession planning, and leadership transformation. Her prior senior roles include leading diversity and workforce strategy initiatives at major organizations such as Harley-Davidson, Darden Restaurants, and Novant Health, as well as serving in government and advisory capacities. She is widely recognized for designing data-driven approaches that improve organizational communication, trust, and workforce outcomes. Dr. Ashton holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and Public Practice and an EdD in Psychology from Harvard University, along with postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. She is a licensed clinical psychologist and has served as an advisor to or member of numerous corporate, academic, and nonprofit boards, including university boards and governance advisory councils. Her thought leadership has been published in outlets such as the Harvard Business Review, and she is recognized for her contributions to pay equity, inclusive leadership, and organizational effectiveness.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my eagerness to continuously learn new things, my commitment to continuing education, and my goal-driven mindset. I also take pride in being detail-oriented and maintaining a strong work ethic, which together help me consistently perform at a high level and achieve my objectives.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is that the more I know, the more I grow. I’ve also learned the importance of bringing positivity to others, as it often returns in kind and helps create a more supportive and fulfilling professional environment.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to learn from mistakes and use them as opportunities to grow while continuing to move forward with confidence. I encourage them not to be intimidated by others, to stand tall and be proud of who they are, and to make sure their voice is heard.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunity in my field right now is the continued ability to reach out to more businesses and support their leadership and development needs. I see strong potential in expanding my impact by helping organizations strengthen their operations, improve performance, and achieve sustainable growth through effective guidance and coaching.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are being kind and respectful to others, being a strong and supportive team leader, and being a good listener. I also value making a positive difference every day through my actions and interactions with others.
