Her Story
About Deborah
I got into the medical field because I got bored and wanted to do something as opposed to raising my kids. I've always loved the science of the body and how it works - I'm a big science geek. I've been in this field for 18 years now. My typical day involves going to work and triaging people, doing injections, ear lavages, and wound care. I see anywhere from 10 patients on up to 30 patients in a day. I take vital signs and do eKGs and HEDIS measures - I do all kinds of stuff. I primarily work with older patients, and the challenge is that different age groups have vastly different needs. What drives me and pushes me every day is my kids, my granddaughter, my friend, and my family. I just graduated a couple weeks ago in May from Ultimate Medical Academy with my Associates in Medical Billing and Coding, and I'm part of the Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society. I also have my Associates in Health Sciences. I just re-enrolled in college at Western Governors University for my bachelor's degree in health sciences. I've got the chance to get into two hospital systems right now, so I'm gonna take that leap of faith and try.

Ten minutes with Deborah
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Always listen to the patient. They know how their body's feeling best.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't give up. If you get your chance to get into one of the hospital systems, get in the door with one of those - that's the absolute biggest opportunity you can get. It doesn't hurt to try new things. If you feel that you can reach that goal, definitely try.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is working with different age groups. I primarily work with older patients, and different age groups have vastly different needs. Somebody that's in their younger years has different needs than somebody in their older years. As for opportunities, working with one of the hospital systems is the absolute biggest opportunity you can get. If you get your chance to get into one of those, get in the door.
