She values honesty highly in her work and personal life, as demonstrated by immediately ending relationships with clients who are not forthcoming.

Ten minutes with Deborah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I try to put a client at ease. I use humor to do that. I think my speech and theater degree helps me in that regard. Improv was one of my favorite parts. And I try to understand that people learn in 3 different ways auditory, visual, tactile and hit all three when I'm training someone.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Train somebody to take your job. It's the only way you move forward. I always trained somebody to take my job which was how I was able to move through the bank from the teller line to the CFO suite.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Show a good work ethic from the beginning. Don't call in sick just because you don't feel like working today. Go to work. When you're there, volunteer for extra work. Always be thinking about what's your next step. Train your replacement so you're ready to move up when the opportunity arises.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

So many small business owners are under stress right now. The big conglomerates are pushing so many of them out of business. Tariffs are affecting importers and retailers, raising prices, slowing sales, and the tariff rebate process is delayed.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty. If a client's not honest with me, I fire them immediately. I don't abide people who lie to me.
