Her Interview
Ten minutes with Deborah s
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the community, my family, and the people who have been with me on this journey. It's everyone who has helped me grow and who has allowed me to continue to grow, because they support me and are part of all of it.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to listen and let the other person speak. When we're interviewing and we have questions, we get excited, so I have to really not get taken into the conversation. I think it's about listening to the people and making sure that the person's story that I'm interviewing is truly given by them.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be gentle. Have no expectations, and allow the energies to unfold as it's presenting itself to you in the moment of now. Use your voice and hear them roar. Make a rumble into that collective, a rumble of love.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think the challenges are those who don't believe in what I do, and that's okay because I'm not here to change their mindset. But what makes it difficult is that people want evidence and proof. The times now require that I be an evidential medium, which means I have to bring evidence to prove that I'm speaking to your loved one, and that evidence has to be precise. I got to the point where I just learned to finally really just be myself, and if it wasn't meant for that person to understand it, I understand that it's okay. So I think those are challenges with the mindset of not believing in what I do.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are the integrity of the work, the responsibility that comes with it, and the ethics that come with it. Whatever is shared needs to be done with love and kindness, and also be done in that state of gentleness, because my work deals with grief. I always want to make sure that we are coming from that heart space.
