Ten minutes with Debra
01What do you attribute your success to?
Perseverance and passion.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Believe in yourself.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Follow your passion and dreams, and don't let anyone tell you that you cannot achieve them. Be prepared to work hard, and remember that there are many different career trajectories that may fulfill you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Federal funding for astronomical research, space missions, and ground-based facilities is crucial but not guaranteed. At the same time, the new observatories on the ground and in space have pushed our astronomical boundaries in ways unimaginable when I started in the field a half-century ago. With more PhD astronomers every year, finding jobs in academia and space-related industry and government labs is challenging.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, compassion, and commitment
