Her Story

About Debra

Debra Fox serves as the owner and operator of a nonprofit homeless shelter in Gulfport, Mississippi, which she founded in 2010 after growing up assisting her mother with similar work in Memphis, Tennessee. As an LPN with four decades of nursing experience, Fox also oversees group homes that developed from her shelter operations, providing daily care including meals, medication, and personal assistance to residents. She earned an associate degree in nursing from Gulf Coast Community College at the Jeff Davis campus. Fox integrates her professional work with ministry as First Lady of her church, where she teaches Sunday school, leads praise and worship, and runs the Sister Strengthening Sister Facebook group with over 10,000 followers. She credits her mother with teaching her to prioritize helping people over financial gain and attributes her success to maintaining discipline, focus, and spiritual guidance without distraction.

Ten minutes with Debra

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being disciplined in the church. I grew up in the church, so I was disciplined. And I learned discipline, and I learned to focus, and I learned not to be distracted. It comes, when you get your calling and your purpose, a whole lot of distractions to try to get you off your course, but I learned to be disciplined, focus, and don't be distracted to what your purpose is in life, and where you see that the Lord is leading you. Don't be biased, don't be prejudiced, anything like that. Just follow the Spirit and you'll find your success which is your purpose in life.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My mother always taught me never look at the money. She said don't do anything just for the money, for the sake of the money. She said go ahead and do what you have to do and help people. She said the money will come later. She said if you just look at the money, you'll lose actually what you supposed what you was born and your purpose in life. It'll stop you. She said never look at the money just go and minister, do what you can do, and the money will come later.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Nursing is a calling. It's an answering to the call of God to minister to people, both body, spirit, and soul. And do not let nursing just be, you just think you're just a nurse and that's it, but continue to listen for the call because from nursing, to me, it's like a bouncing board. You start out there, but you don't stay in there, because it's just an opening, or a portal, or a door to lead you to further ministering to people, both body, spirit, and soul. To the homeless, to those that don't even know the Lord, to those that are being overlooked by society. And to grow and be able to hear and follow. Don't be afraid to follow that call when it goes beyond the nursing, when it goes beyond the hospitals and the nursing home, and it takes you on out a little further. So that's that would be my advice, that once you begin your call as a nurse, you can look for it to grow and progress. Don't be afraid to take it on wherever the Lord leads you.
